This page provides a glossary of geological terms to be found on the TVRIGS website and elsewhere. It is an evolving document and will grow as the site expands.



T

Triassic
Named (by von Humbodt, 1795) from a three-fold division (red-beds, chalk and black shales) which occurs in Germany. It covers an episode in Earth’s history betwee c.251million and 199 million years before present. The Triassic is further subdivided into Lower, Middle and Upper episodes. These strata crop out sparsely along the lower reaches of the River Tees.



W

Weathering
Creation of clastic detritus through the action of water and/or solar energy. Weathering involves no transport of the weathered debris.
Whinstone
A colloquial term for any dark fine-grained igneous rock (e.g. dolerite, basalt, andesite, etc.).The name is derived from the Great Whin Sill of Northumberland and Durham.
