On an overcast day in October, with a light breeze off the sea, twenty-three keen walkers took a stroll along the foreshore between Saltburn and Skinningrove returning on the Cleveland Way cliff top path…
The group met at the Ship Inn at Saltburn and set off along the scar around 10:30am.
View of Huntcliff from near the Ship Inn.
The group approaching what seem to be the remains of an alum house in the cliff.
Remains of a clay-lined pit which appears to have held liquid. Could it have been alum liquor?
More remains in the cliff c.30 metres west of the cistern. Was it part of an alum working site?
Continuing along the beach toward the scar and Huntcliff.
The group search for and discuss fossils en-route to Huntcliff foot.
View looking west to Saltburn from the scar.
The group examine and discuss iron-rich nodules found in the scar.
We found a rutway in the scar just east of Huntcliff foot.
As it proceeds east the rutway curves toward Skinningrove.
A perched block: Boulders falling from the cliff cause differential erosion of the softer scar leaving them on pedestals. Also known as 'Mermaid's Tables'.
On the beach again near Skinningrove where we stopped for lunch.
Lunch was taken with Hummersea Cliff and Loftus Quarries as a backdrop.
Climbing from the beach to the Cleveland Way (Phew!).

Beth holds forth on the former ironstone mine at Huntcliff with the Guibal fanhouse behind.
Artwork on the cliffs east of Huntcliff Mine.
View of Saltburn and the coast toward Redcar from the cliff top.
