In 2003 Tees Valley Wildlife Trust intoroduced a Geodiversity Action Plan. Part of this involved the development of a list of all sites of geodiversity importance within the Tees Valley. This list was narrowed down and submitted to local authorities for approval. These sites are our current RIG Sites for the Tees Valley.

One of the RIGS is Kilton Hill (shale heap from ironstone mining). In recent weeks a local farmer has been using a JCB to remove shale from heap, said to be with the landowner’s permission. At a public inquiry held in August 1991 the landowner stated categorically that no further removal of shale would take place from the heap, presumably one of the reasons why the heap has remained and become suitable for a RIGS.
